Success as a learner

I have had success as a learner in two particular subjects, French and humanities. I have studied French for six years now, but sadly I have forgotten most of it as I learned it in my early years. In my first year of French here at graded I have had a chance to remember and learn back my French. A project that makes me particularly proud is my autobiography. I am proud of this work because it illustrates that I am on the way of fluently speaking French.

Another juncture that marks my success throughout 8th grade is my humanities is my reflection on the early Soviet Union (USSR). The unit clarified politics and certain conflicts to me, and that is why I view it as a success. I picked these two paragraphs out of my reflection because they indicate my understanding the best and how I will adapt these lessons to my future assignments.

Important lessons or ideas I will take away from this unit consist of methods of how men come to power, stay there, and the mistakes they make during their carrier. In the time of the USSR Lenin and Stalin both came to power in cunning, but smart ways, outsmarting their opponents one by one, leaving them alone at the top. For the future, if I ever will follow a similar type of carrier I will try to implement their positive ideas, and action, into my own work. This will allow me to the best in the area I am specified to.
If I had to choose a part of the HIPP analysis and apply it as a method of learning outside humanities it would be historical context toward any history class. I will apply historical context to my future works into the class mentioned above because I often get confused in what sequence events happen in history. Historical context forces you to create an accurate paragraph purely focused on the sequence of events during the historical time period. It also helps you organize key details, like dates and certain key actions which occurred during that time period. I used during my research and studies of the early USSR and It cleared large amounts of doubt. I do recommend it to others because it is really an effective technique.

Challenges you've faced

Two challenges that I faced during this semester were most definitely my struggle in Portuguese class and geography. Portuguese was challenge because it's a new language that I am learning, which causes me to have difficulty with the subject matter; and geography is a new skill that I am developing as well in 8th grade.

This project down below is what I have worked on in portuguese. I consider it my first every writing piece in Portuguese. It was hard challenge, but in the end I overcame it.

Publish at Calameo

In my geography class I have memorized all of Africa's countries and created two maps indicating its countries HDI (human development index) and the malnutrition rates within certain regions. To my surprise, geography is particularly hard, because you must find out why certain events occur in a country (or multiple ones). This new train of thought caused me to have a rough start, but in the end I wound up with a successful project.

Learning habits Reflections (core values)

Throughout this semester, I have had to use many core-values to overcome obstacles in my classes. But the two core-values that I have used most is perseverance and balanced. I used perseverance as major core-value during my class in math. As an example, I was first in standard math, and after one semester I moved to extended where I am now a level 6 student. This wouldn't be achievable without perseverance, things like, doing your homework, optional or not, practicing extra if you believe it is needed and paying lots of attention in class are crucial factors to success.
Balanced was another one of my most used core-values throughout 8th grade, I had to balance out being an athletic and academic student. From my point of view, it's been the hardest challenged I have had yet to understand. At one point your grades are more important and you will slack off on staying fit as you have to spend time on studying. At times, these types of situations make me feel depressed because I don't feel "athletic" or "scholastic" enough to meet my expectations. Throughout 8th grade I have tried to find a balance between the two. Lately, it had been going well with mental behaviour, hopefully I have found a balance.

Teen Changes Reflection

Pressure to meet expectations

---------------------------------------------------------------------

1) What do you think are the most intense emotional, social or physical challenges for Grade 8 teens? Explain Why.

In my opinion, pressure to meet expectations is the hardest challenge. When a student can't fit in a group or feels that he or she doesn't have a good enough balance between, lets say, academics and athletics; he or she automatically refers to himself as imperfect. From my experience, it is the hardest challenge out there, to be good at a large amount of activities so you can fit in. This idea to perfect our variety of subjects creates many symptoms of stress.

2) How can we deal with this type of pressure or expectations? Explain some strategies.

Their are a few ways you can deal with this type of situation. First of all, try to find something you are good at and neglect the influence friends give you. If you have passion you enjoy the work you put into it would be less stressful. Or decide to narrow you friend group down so the stress to satisfy their "expectations" goes down by a large amount. This is worth doing because you will be way closer to your other friends.

Character Scenario

1) What are some potential physical signs that Min Jung may be developing an eating disorder?

She is is losing and gaining weight at rapid rates without a steady balance.

2) What emotional/mental/behavioral signs that Min Jung may be developing an eating disorder?

She was spending more time on her own especially after meal times. She was hanging out less with friends and more with the bathroom, where she was vomiting.

3) What are some external (life changing) factors that may be influencing the risk of Min Jung developing an eating disorder?

Her sister moving out and the lack of attention she received from her parents. All these factors caused Min Jung do developed an eating disorder named, Bulimia.

4) What eating disorder do you think she may be developing?

After reading the story that was illustrated I believe that Min Jung may have developed Bulimia.

5) What other signs of an eating disorder (not mentioned in the story) could you look out for?

You potentially look for signs like, swollen gums, inflated stomach or eroded teeth,

6) Now you finish the story! Write a 2-4 sentence ending about how Min Jung can get help for her current situation.

Mary, one of Min Jung's friends, was realizing that Min Jung was changing her social behavior; she spend much less time with her after eating and during the time they ate together she would eat a lot, more than usual. She was also losing weight at a slow, but visible rate. Mary was very concerned about her health and asked the councilor if he could advise Min Jung to get professional help.

Minha Lenda!

Another learning experience in humanities!

In my opinion, learning my social studies best is through reading primary documents, textbooks with questions to clarify understanding, and then executing our learning in simulations. This method for me along with some video's or engaging activities during classes is the the best because it makes you remember and understand the knowledge you learned in class. With these techniques I remember what I have learned because it was fun and, most importantly, interesting. Not to mention, that I also understand my learning because I received such a diverse amount of ways to conduct it.
I think my teacher decided to for me what I will take away form this unit, because he highlighted the points in the history of our unit. I take his examples and agree with because he is more experienced with the unit than I am. Therefore, I will agree and remember the knowledge he finds important.
My thoughts about analyzing political cartoons are quite fair because they cover all the parts of the aspects of the cartoon. It makes you understand the true meaning of the cartoon better. The way we analyze political cartoons in class goes by the following: Analogy, Irony, Symbolism, Labelling and exaggeration. These terms help you understand the meaning of the cartoon and most importantly the point of view of the author and why the author would want to publish such an image.
I think we continue to use DBQ in our learning course because it has a strict formula and practises your writing skills. DBQ paragraph have a strict formula and so it's easy to write one with it's formula as a base. This helps you create a structure it will help you in further writing piece as you will insert the knowledge from the DBQ paragraphs into your science essay for example. This leads me to conclude, that teachers make us use this method as a base for all writing pieces. Basically, a revision or practise for more difficult writing pieces.
  • Without perseverance you won't reach your true potential.
