Diving into a water world!

Next lab, lab 9 we will be studying the unit "the world in a drop of water". We will be using three sources of water, one from the fish tank, two from the water fall, and three water from the Represa Guarapiranga. A large reservoir. I think we will see different living organisms in the water. For example if it is dirty water we might find bacteria. We might find the source of oxygen in the water which fish use to breath through. I have the feeling that this will be a very interesting topic to study and that we will go deeper than just exploring cells. I can't wait!

Theatre

I really enjoyed watching group one's final play I think they did a great job in keeping up their spirit and enthusiasm. I think they could have improved on the ending where Ana Diaz called luklin weird kid. Which I thought did not really fit the play. I got some inspiration on this play and would like to include the enthusiasm in my character role too.

Science!!!

The cuticle is a waxy, impermeable layer, like an umbrella. It is the top layer and bottom layer of the leaf and serves as a protection layer, protecting them against viruses and fungus. Water will not be absorbed by the cuticle even if it is underwater. The upper epidermis helps prevent dehydration for the plant. The Palisade layer holds many chloroplasts. The spongy layer enables the molecules to flow easily between cells. The lower epidermis has a group of cells called guard cells. Protective cells.

When there is no water in the plant the guard cells cant open up the stoma and so no oxygen can be produced.

Being a Critical-thinker

1)  Considering these artifacts, in which of the core values have you shown the most success?

Considering to all my artifacts I think I have shone most success in critical thinkers.

2) Thinking back to our first Student Led Conference, in which of the core values have you demonstrated the most progress or growth?  Why?
Thinking back to my first SLC i think I have made progress in the core value critical thinker because in all classes I must think well and in a different way. For example in math the metacognition project, science the science fair and humanities the argumentative essay.

3)  Which core value is most challenging for you?  Why?

I think a challenging core value for me is being balanced. I think this because at one point I think PE is really important and I focus myself on PE and less on other subjects like humanities, math and science.

4)  How has your thinking / performance changed since first semester?

I think my thinking/performance has changed because I have the feeling I have improved in many things, for example writing an essay and making a two-voice poem in humanities. But I also know how to make different graphs in math like, a stem and leaf plot or a line graph. In science I know different parts of a cell like the membrane or nucleus.

How was my argumentative essay?

1) What is your artifact?

My artifact was the Three Gorges Dam.

2)  What is The Three Gorges Dam?  Why is it controversial?

The dam is controversial because it should have been built because it generates clean energy for 1/9 of China’s population and it creates more trade in China.
And the dam shouldn’t have been built because the raising reservoir took out 1300 archaeological sites, displaced 1.3 million people and is creating geological disasters like landslides and mudslides.

3)  What is an argumentative essay?

An argumentative essay is an essay representing your claim supported by evidence and analysis.

4)  What is your essay’s claim?

My claim is the Three Gorges Dam shouldn’t have been built

5)  What process did you go through to complete your essay?

The process I went through to write my essay was gathering evidence via articles and cites. Then developing my three body paragraphs and after that writing my introduction and conclusion and finally I made my final draft.

6)  What was one specific area where you demonstrated success?

Argumentative essay final draft, I think I improved in my body paragraphs. I think that they improved in ways like the structure, my analysis and my evidence.

7)  What was one challenge of writing the argumentative essay?

One challenge of writing the argumentative essay was to follow the order, the rules and add things like transitions to make your essay better.

8)  If you could rewrite this essay, what would you do differently?

If I had to rewrite my essay then I would make a stronger claim in my introduction.

9)  Comparing your argumentative essay for the common writing assessment last quarter to this one, where are some areas where you see growth?

I have seen a lot of areas of growth like my structure, evidence, analysis, conclusion and introduction.

10)  What core values does this relate to and why?

A core value that represents me in my argumentative essay is being a critical thinker. I say this because in my essay I think i have demonstrated my thinking.

Will the lettuce cells eat lettuce?

In lab 8 we will be getting a closer look at lettuce cells. I am exited for what results I will get. Since lettuce is a plant, it has photosynthesis and so the cell will probably have cloroplast. But I got the feeling that there is a reason that we are looking at lettuce cells and not anything else. I got the feeling there is something unique with the plants cells. But what will it be?

Greek Theatre!!

Friday's theatre lesson was really fun. During are whole class we stayed and researched in the library. We used books and sites as are recourses. During the theatre class I learned a lot about ancient Greece and how theatre first began. This is the document are class used to work in. Right now I think I have a bigger understanding about greek theatre.

Metacognition Project Reflection

Metacognition Project Reflection

For the past months my math class has been working on a metacognition project, thinking about my thinking.  This project has helped me in math. It has helped me by finding my inner voice that gives me instructions of how solve math problems.  I am not totally sure if I have found it but I do realise a change in my thinking. My partner I worked with was Martin Hoberman. He good partner because he gave good feedback on my mistakes and what I had done well. Reflecting on my thinking/listening to my inner voice while doing math helps me but also confuses me. It helps me because I read over it and realise what I am doing. But it also confuses me because I am not used to saying my thinking out loud.

This year I have learned that metacognition can help you understand your thinking. I don't think metacognition helps you in other classes only in math, because you evaluate the problem out loud and realise your mistakes.
